Understanding the Control of Biological Clocks

Introduction: Circadian rhythms—our internal biological clocks—control when we sleep, wake, and feel energized. They are influenced by light, daily habits, and the environment. Summary: The master biological clock, located in the brain’s SCN, coordinates rhythms across the body and regulates melatonin. When circadian rhythms are disrupted by travel, screens, shift work, or illness, they lead to tiredness, poor concentration, and increased long-term health risks. Teenagers naturally have later body clocks, making early mornings challenging and contributing to sleep loss. Research shows that aligning lifestyle habits with these rhythms—such as getting morning sunlight or following consistent sleep schedules—supports better health. Individual chronotypes mean people function best at different times of day. Conclusion: Understanding and respecting our circadian rhythms helps improve sleep, performance, and overall wellbeing in a world that often disrupts our natural cycles.
